Known for their comfort, durability and good looks, Bass is quality brand that includes popular styles for men, women and children. Although full-sized Bass stores also offer a line of clothing, this store is focused mostly on footwear. It does, however, sell some socks and a few jackets. There are casual sandals and clogs, dressy heels and lace-up shoes, comfortable walking shoes and even rain boots and other wet weather gear.  The store also offers an excellent selection of Bass handbags and travel bags, as well a selection of rolling luggage. One of the original surf shops on the Outer Banks, if not in the state of North Carolina, the quaint and friendly Cavalier has been at the same Beach Road location for more than 50 years. It’s been owned and operated by the same local family for close to 30 years, so you know this is the real deal.  Not only does the shop have a lot of customers who come back every year, now they’re seeing children of the repeat customers coming back every season.  At 1,300 square feet, the shop is a simple square building built right at ground level across from the beach. It’s had some close calls, but somehow it has survived numerous hurricanes and nor’easters. A photograph taken after the infamous Ash Wednesday Storm in 1962 shows the devastation on the oceanfront, and there’s the Cavalier sitting intact in the midst of the mayhem. Despite its compact size, the shop is stuffed top to bottom with all a surfer would want: top brand surf clothing and footwear; surf gear and accessories; boards, beach chairs and umbrellas for sale or rent. Surfing lessons are also available, and loyal customers and lovers of Outer Banks heritage can pick up Cavalier T-shirts.

Whenever you need a break from the beach, Cloud Nine is a great place for some creative renewal. This very cool shop was established here in 1988, and its since been a favorite for locals and visitors looking for unique creations from Outer Banks and regional artisans -- pottery, paintings, jewelry -- but especially to indulge one’s own creative yearnings by making earrings or a necklace, or who knows? There’s a vast selection -- the largest on the beach -- of the prettiest beads of all sizes and colors, including authentic trade and vintage beads, gorgeous seaglass and other jewelry-making supplies to choose from to fashion say, an ankle bracelet or headband. And if you don't know how to start, owner Ginnie Flowers and her staff offer weekly classes and workshops, specializing in seaglass wire wrapping and beading. Along with sharing her talents and supporting over 50 local artists and designers, Ginnie gives back to the community in a number of other ways. She contributes to Dare County’s Arts Council, Animal Rescue, Surfrider Foundation and, to encourage children's literacy, she started a "Read for Beads" program. You'll not want to miss Ginnie's treasure of a shop, tucked away near a corner in Pirate's Quay Shopping Center, just south of the YMCA. What better way to spend the day but by making something beautiful to wear or give as a gift? Cloud Nine offers the best kind of Outer Banks souvenir: one crafted with your own hands.

This is one of the oldest make-your-own T-shirt shops on the Outer Banks, where customers can come and pick  from one of 800 decal designs. And every single one of them is displayed on the walls! Naturally, with that number to choose from, there is just about every theme imaginable covered: from birds to fish to sharks to pirates to dogs to horses to flowers to lighthouses to motorcycles. If you don’t want pictures, you can pick out a clever saying about lots of subjects, including grandparents, spouses, vacations or beer. Blank shirts in all different colors ---even tie-dye ---- include short sleeved, sleeveless, hoodies, sweats, babies onesies, kid-sized and long-sleeved. The store also carries the usual selection of necessary tourist items like beverage huggies, OBX souvenirs, towels, sunglasses, hats, stickers and some costume jewelry.

This outlet store features clothing geared towards outdoor living, making it a popular place to shop for Outer Banks residents and tourists who think the best way to enjoy the beautiful barrier islands is by being outside. Since it’s an outlet store, prices are already cut. But seasonal sales offer fantastic bargains, so it’s always worth a stop to see what’s the latest deal. This is a good place to find coats and jackets for men and women, ranging from super warm for the winter months, to raingear and lightweight cover-ups for spring and summer months. There is always a good selection of active wear suitable for golfing or walking, from shirts, skirts, shorts and pants. High-quality backpacks of every size and for every need are also available.

Unlike most businesses on the Outer Banks, the summertime is the quiet time at this tanning salon, meaning you’re more likely not to have to wait for one of the five tanning beds. But even if you just need to touch up your tan before hitting the beach, you’ll find what you need here.  The medium low-pressure “super bed” offers a 15-minute session for those gals or guys who haven’t tanned in a while, and the medium high-pressure 12-minute session (and most popular) is great for those with a “base” who want the quickest and tannest tan.  Sessions can be purchased individually or in packages. There are also at least 40 tanning lotions in stock,  ranging from the most fabulous and expensive, like Designer Skin Black, to mid-range, like Party at the Mansion, to the more affordable, like Super Black. The salon also sells wonderful skin moisturizers and exceptional outdoor tanners and spray-on tan. Twilight Teeth are also available for purchase to whiten your teeth while you’re tanning. In addition to tanning products, the salon sells purses, jewelry, sunglasses and designer jeans.

Men and women of all ages can be seen looking for one of the many bargains and markdowns on dresses, blouses, shorts, men’s shirts and pants, jackets, coats, workout wear, sweaters, T-shirts and hoodies, hats, gloves and shoes. Rather than calling the fashion trendy, Gap, which was founded in 1969, considers its clothing line to be clean and classic.  Clothing and accessories for babies and girls and boys can also be found here. There are plenty of dressing rooms, so even when the store is crowded, there’s seldom a wait to try on clothes.

Sizes go from pre-teen tiny to extra large, but naturally the best choices are in the mid-ranges. There is also a large line of Champion athletic wear for women, which is hard to find on the Outer Banks. The selection of high impact bras for exercise is especially good, and there’s often a sale. The store also sells lacy and more delicate underwear for romantic evenings, as well as some shape wear. And yes, the store also sells men’s under garments, but you have to go to the back to find them. And that’s where you’ll also find women’s socks and panti-hose.

The big dog of outdoor recreation on the Outer Banks, Kitty Hawk Kites knows how to help people make the most of the beautiful Outer Banks environment. Here’s a place you can’t help feeling happy visiting. Founded in 1994 by brothers Bert and John Jacobs, Life is Good is centered around products featuring a simple drawing of a character, Jake, and his contagious smile.  As the company took off nationally, the drawings have expanded to depictions on products of other charming characters, including a very cute dog. Under the umbrella of  Kitty Hawk Kites, which is located next door, the store features T-shirts, coffee mugs, beach supplies and hats with wry sayings and irresistible cartoon drawings to fit numerous activities and topics,  as long as they’re upbeat.  The T-shirts are high quality and exceptionally soft. Don’t forget the dog or the baby --- there’s some irresistible items for little canines and tiny humans. A bonus: The store, located at Milepost 13 off the Bypass,is right across from Jockey’s Ridge State Park, the tallest natural sand dune system on the East Coast. If you get there at dusk, you’ll pretty much be guaranteed to see an eye-popping sunset right out the front door.  But any time of the day will be a worthy trip to this fun shop. The store is decorated with big Harley banners and decorative signs that are for sale, and is filled with a great collection of Harley T-shirts for men, women and children. In addition to a selection of bike gear, there’s key rings, collectible stuffed toys, baby items, hats, sandals, jewelry, hoodies and sunglasses. The store is nearly bursting with colorful merchandise, literally filling every possible space from floor to ceiling. Since 1975, Surfside Casuals has been selling a vast selection of bathing suits and beach accessories for men, women, girls and boys. And if there’s one truism about the Outer Banks, it’s that no one stays in business unless they’re doing it right.  Surfside, locally owned and operated by the same owner since day one, knows their inventory, and they happily help customers with fitting and other details about selecting the right suit for their needs. Sizes offered include juniors, women’s 4-24W and girl's 4-16. There’s the usual tourist souvenirs sold here --- shell wreaths, OBX glasses and cups, for instance --- but mostly it’s a great place to find the perfect swimsuit at a time-honored Outer Banks establishment

This  recently opened chain discount store was welcomed by many Outer Bankers, who appreciate a good deal and quality merchandise. Located on the border of Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills, its central Outer Banks location makes T.J. Maxx a popular destination for locals and visitors looking to save a little money on a designer item.  Prices range from rock-bottom to merely affordable, but the inventory is always changing, so part of the fun is unearthing surprises. Shoppers can find everything from sexy lingerie to business suits and sportswear for women, to surf wear and jeans and dress pants for men. There’s also plenty of kids’ clothes, swimwear, home décor, beauty and cosmetic items and jewelry to browse. It’s just kind of fun to come in and see what T.J. Maxx has to offer week to week.

This upscale outlet store, one of the newer additions to the Tanger Outet Mall,  focuses on the most popular and best selling items in the Talbot’s line, remade to be more affordable. Talbot’s made its reputation on its business wear for working women, but the merchandise at this store is strictly weekend or cruise wear to serve the vacationing women (or those who want to be!) Casual, classic and colorful, the apparel is available in petite and misses sizes, with some women’s sizes. All the styles are contemporary, feminine and practical, and none are seconds or leftovers from the previous year --- skirts, slacks, T-shirts, shorts and sweaters, all in various colors and patterns. And judging from the women customers who come to the outlet store, the clothing line appeals to all ages.

The shop manager likes to describe this cool store as “the most fun place on the beach.” That might be pushing it, but it’s definitely one of those stores that make you smile and want to take something home. It’s got everything from classic women’s clothing to cutting edge trendy garb, for “teeny-bopper to grandmother,” and from tip to toe ---literally. There’s shapewear, dresses, blouses, pants, skirts and shoes and sandals. And there are all the embellishments and accessories---belts, scarves, purses, jewelry, hats --- all unique and stylish. Plus, there’s lots of playful and colorful housewares and beach-y décor --- mirrors, lamps, shell decorations, art, candles, picture frames. There are even troll beads and charms in stock. Funny cards and plaques sold throughout the store would make an amusing gift or souvenir.

This creative professional seamstress shop, new in 2012, is owned by Kelly Cassady, a young woman who earned her stripes with a degree in fashion design from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and an internship in New York City.  But Cassady has also worked in the costume shop of The Lost Colony and been sewing since she was 13 years old, so she has a broad understanding of her craft.

Enjoy a little treasure hunting during an Outer Banks shopping expedition with a visit to this shop that has plenty of creative and one-of-a-kind items to discover. Vintage Vibe OBX is a chic antique shop that features miles more than the traditional collectables, and visitors of all tastes will have a fun time exploring the crowded aisles to see what’s new and unique with every visit.

The shop also offers surfboard rentals and surfing lessons in the summer months.

The quintessential tourist store, Wings is stocked floor to ceiling with beach-related clothing and nearly every other possible  beach-y item imaginable. With store locations from Corolla to Hatteras Island, this is the place visitors depend on to get low-priced Outer Banks T-shirts and souvenirs. Locals are not as prone to shop here, but it’s not unusual to see a resident run in to buy some sand toys or a beach chair. In addition to boogie boards and bathing suits, there’s flip-flops, umbrellas, sun dresses, beach balls, OBX items, sun hats, costume jewelry, sunscreen, lighters, magnets, key chains . . .  the list goes on. The stores are a little gaudy, and the merchandise is not known for its high quality, but whatever you purchase will at least get you through your vacation without your wallet taking too much of a hit.
