This small convenience store in the heart of Nags Head has become a bit of a local landmark all its own, thanks to its unforgettable name and its coveted merchandise, as well as its selection of great breakfast and deli fare. Biscuits N' Porn may not be a traditional stop on an Outer Banks vacation, but it lures in locals and tourists alike with its distinctive moniker, and its daily helping of homemade biscuits and other tasty grub which is easy to enjoy on the go.

A friendly staff and small town atmosphere makes this well-equipped grocery store a pleasure to shop at, and many visitors come regularly on their annual vacation. Situated on the oceanfront next to Jennette’s Pier, this local family-owned market has been in business for more than 50 years. This is a great place to pick up fresh-made sandwiches, snacks and salads for a picnic lunch at the beach, or on your way to go fishing all day at Oregon Inlet.  Cold drinks, beer and good selection of wine and quality meat are also available here, as well as gourmet cheeses and fixings. One of the newer auto parts stores on the Outer Banks, Car Quest is a locally-owned chain store that has what vehicle owners need to take care of anything from a motorcycle to a pickup truck to a SUV. Basic supplies like oil and transmission fluid can be found here, as well as summer needs like air conditioner kits and boosters, sun protection window tint, sun shades for windows and antifreeze/coolant for the radiator. The store stocks a good supply of car wash equipment and cleaners and waxes, too. One of the original surf shops on the Outer Banks, if not in the state of North Carolina, the quaint and friendly Cavalier has been at the same Beach Road location for more than 50 years. It’s been owned and operated by the same local family for close to 30 years, so you know this is the real deal.  Not only does the shop have a lot of customers who come back every year, now they’re seeing children of the repeat customers coming back every season.  At 1,300 square feet, the shop is a simple square building built right at ground level across from the beach. It’s had some close calls, but somehow it has survived numerous hurricanes and nor’easters. A photograph taken after the infamous Ash Wednesday Storm in 1962 shows the devastation on the oceanfront, and there’s the Cavalier sitting intact in the midst of the mayhem. Despite its compact size, the shop is stuffed top to bottom with all a surfer would want: top brand surf clothing and footwear; surf gear and accessories; boards, beach chairs and umbrellas for sale or rent. Surfing lessons are also available, and loyal customers and lovers of Outer Banks heritage can pick up Cavalier T-shirts.

When you go to the beach, you have to have saltwater taffy. That’s where Forbes Candies comes in. With roots in Virginia Beach going back to 1930, this family-owned business expanded to the Outer Banks in the 1960s, and there are now four locations here with a wide variety of every kind of sweet for your sweetheart, your kids or yourself. But of course the specialty is saltwater taffy in a vast selection of flavors. Then there’s gourmet fudge, made with all kinds of nuts and chocolate flavors. And the Virginia peanut brittle is still made with the same authentic recipe the Forbes used in their first store in Virginia Beach. There are other beachy delicacies like brown sugar and vanilla seafoam. YUM! The stores also have an interesting souvenir selection, and the Rodanthe store, which opens at 7 a.m. in the summer, also serves coffee and tea.

In addition to a selection of bike gear, there’s key rings, collectible stuffed toys, baby items, hats, sandals, jewelry, hoodies and sunglasses. One of the oldest authentic surf shops on the Outer Banks, Secret Spot has been surfer-owned at the same location since the early 1980s.  Store founder Steve Hess started board shaping in 1971, and his world-renowned boards have been ridden by many of the Outer Banks’ best surfers, and by many others from Hawaii to California to Australia. With its ceiling covered with surfboards, the shop offers custom made Secret Spot Surf Boards and used boards, body boards, skim boards, as well as skate gear.  Board rentals and surf lessons are also available. A wide range of designer surfwear can be found here, including Rip Curl, Sanuk, Roxy, Rainbow, Lost, Oakley, Electric and O’Neill.  Bathing suits, hats, shoes, shorts, sunglasses, watches and T-shirts are available in a variety of sizes and styles for the entire family.  There’s even cool infant and baby clothes, and tropical gifts and surf art in stock.

An authentic Outer Banks treasure, this shell shop is one of the oldest family-owned stores in Nags Head, and it is without a doubt one of the most interesting.  Opened in 1954 by Woodrow Stetson, a Coast Guardsman, and his wife Lucretia, the building burned down in 1965 and was rebuilt at the same location where it is today --- and is still operated by the same family. Visiting Shipwreck, located off the Nags Head-Manteo causeway, is like going to an art museum because the shells are like works of art. Imported from exotic locales all over the world including the Philippines, Tahiti, Australia, Indonesia and Thailand, all the shells are real.Check out the stunning (and valuable) Chamber Nautilus and the half Nautilus. Only Mother Ocean could create such a beauty. The store is worth a stop just to see the variety of spectacular shells that wash up on the world’s beaches (some of them, like Conch shells and Sand Dollars, can be found off the Outer Banks).  The shells are displayed neatly on shelves, so you can pick them up and look closely before making a choice of what to buy. There is also a good selection of coral, which has become exceedingly rare and won’t be available for long. (Sea horses no longer are, the owner said.) The three large rooms are stuffed with fascinating sea-related items, including driftwood art; seashell mirrors, lamps, wind chimes and curtains;  shark’s teeth and fish décor. In the back room, there’s an old bathtub filled with small shells for sale by the cupful. There is also a selection of fossils and rocks for sale, right near the massive whale jawbone hanging from the ceiling.

There’s a lot more than “fishy” things at this store, which is much bigger than it looks from the road.  With island music getting customers in the mood as soon as they step inside, the store evokes the layed-back tropical vibe and makes you want to crawl into a hammock and soak up the sun. The store is nearly bursting with colorful merchandise, literally filling every possible space from floor to ceiling. It features hand-crafted jewelry, art and furniture, much of it created by local artisans.  How about some cool silver balls to hang from your ceiling? Or a sun wall ornament ---- offered in a range of sizes and prices? There are also island-themed T-shirts, dresses and sandals for sale. Suffice it to say that everything in this interesting store is beach-y, but with a bit more of a Caribbean or Pacific island edge. There is also a complete selection of Happy Birthday books and greeting cards. And of course there’s plenty of fun fish décor.

This outlet store has an excellent selection of sunglasses for men and women made by favorite designers. Everything from edgy urban trends to classic pretty styles are available to try on, and although they’re not always sold at discount prices, there are often substantial markdowns. Brand names carried here include Ray-Ban, Prada, Arnette, D & G, Coach, Gucci, Vogue Eyewear, Oakley, Revo, Versace, and Stella McCartney.  Designer glasses are not only stylish; they are also well-made and often include the most up-to-date technology on sun protection and safety. One wall is dedicated to items on sale, and there can be great deals found there.  Staff are friendly and know what they’re selling. They can also adjust eyewear to fit right in the store. There are also eyeglass accessories sold here.

Since 1975, Surfside Casuals has been selling a vast selection of bathing suits and beach accessories for men, women, girls and boys. And if there’s one truism about the Outer Banks, it’s that no one stays in business unless they’re doing it right.  Surfside, locally owned and operated by the same owner since day one, knows their inventory, and they happily help customers with fitting and other details about selecting the right suit for their needs. Sizes offered include juniors, women’s 4-24W and girl's 4-16. Not only are there thousands of swimsuits to choose from --- long torso, bra sizes, separates, bikinis, men’s board shorts --- there are also cover-ups, dresses, footwear, beach jewelry, hats, sunglasses, and rash guards. There’s the usual tourist souvenirs sold here --- shell wreaths, OBX glasses and cups, for instance --- but mostly it’s a great place to find the perfect swimsuit at a time-honored Outer Banks establishment

This  recently opened chain discount store was welcomed by many Outer Bankers, who appreciate a good deal and quality merchandise. Located on the border of Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills, its central Outer Banks location makes T.J. Maxx a popular destination for locals and visitors looking to save a little money on a designer item.  Prices range from rock-bottom to merely affordable, but the inventory is always changing, so part of the fun is unearthing surprises. Shoppers can find everything from sexy lingerie to business suits and sportswear for women, to surf wear and jeans and dress pants for men. There’s also plenty of kids’ clothes, swimwear, home décor, beauty and cosmetic items and jewelry to browse. It’s just kind of fun to come in and see what T.J. Maxx has to offer week to week.

An offshoot of Kellogg Supply Company, a building and home center operating on the Outer Banks since 1946, The Cottage Shop is filled with beach-y house wares and furnishings designed for Outer Banks living. The store also stocks decorative accessories, gifts for special occasions and holidays, and even stylish hats and sandals. Whatever a homeowner needs for their beach cottage, they’ll likely be able to find it here. There’s kitchen ware, sheets and bedding, bath items, outdoor carpeting, candles, Outer Banks and Southern cookbooks, lamps, decorative pillows and even gourmet salsa and grits. There is also a large selection of Tervis Tumblers, and open stock of Fiesta ware. Kellogg also offers all-inclusive Cottage Package programs, as well as kitchen, bedding, bath and recreational packages. Hours differ at the Duck location, so call before visiting.

The shop manager likes to describe this cool store as “the most fun place on the beach.” That might be pushing it, but it’s definitely one of those stores that make you smile and want to take something home. It’s got everything from classic women’s clothing to cutting edge trendy garb, for “teeny-bopper to grandmother,” and from tip to toe ---literally. There’s shapewear, dresses, blouses, pants, skirts and shoes and sandals. And there are all the embellishments and accessories---belts, scarves, purses, jewelry, hats --- all unique and stylish. Plus, there’s lots of playful and colorful housewares and beach-y décor --- mirrors, lamps, shell decorations, art, candles, picture frames. There are even troll beads and charms in stock. Funny cards and plaques sold throughout the store would make an amusing gift or souvenir.

Smell it and you will definitely want to buy it. So of course, the exquisite aroma wafts outside, and by the time people come into the store, their resistance to this homemade fudge is pretty weak.  The free samples the staff offer pretty much seals the deal. Made right before your eyes, this creamy fudge comes in numerous mouth watering flavors, including peanut butter, maple nut, rocky road and of course, chocolate.  Started in 1980 on the Outer Banks, The Fudgery now has about 27 stores located in 15 states. The business caught on not only because of its fresh ingredients, but because customers could watch the scrumptious confection being cooked and hand-turned on marble slabs into loaves. Plus, if customers were lucky, the candy maker would sing for them while he worked. (Really!) The store also sells homemade caramel apples, so how can anyone resist? There are also dessert toppings in jars based on the same recipe in three flavors: chocolate, chocolate mint and amaretto. And if you want more when you get home, you can order the fudge, dessert toppings and candy apples from The Fudgery’s online store.

The quintessential tourist store, Wings is stocked floor to ceiling with beach-related clothing and nearly every other possible  beach-y item imaginable. With store locations from Corolla to Hatteras Island, this is the place visitors depend on to get low-priced Outer Banks T-shirts and souvenirs. Locals are not as prone to shop here, but it’s not unusual to see a resident run in to buy some sand toys or a beach chair. In addition to boogie boards and bathing suits, there’s flip-flops, umbrellas, sun dresses, beach balls, OBX items, sun hats, costume jewelry, sunscreen, lighters, magnets, key chains . . .  the list goes on. The stores are a little gaudy, and the merchandise is not known for its high quality, but whatever you purchase will at least get you through your vacation without your wallet taking too much of a hit.
