If you are looking for a diverse collection of handcrafts and fine arts made exclusively by American artisans, you are sure to find it at Sea Dragon Gallery.  For the past 12 years, the gallery in the Waterfront Shops in Duck has been offering works by more than 150 established and emerging artists, including some of the Outer Banks’ own talented artisans. From pottery and glass to metal and wood, every item in the gallery is carefully selected by owner Paula Myatt.

Themed on recycled and repurposed materials, Seagreen Gallery is one of the newest and most innovative art establishments on the Outer Banks.  This is a great place to find a one-of-a-kind gift for someone who has everything.

Since its opening in 1961, Seaside Art Gallery has steadily expanded from one room into an impressive 12 rooms, filled with selections representing an eclectic range of artists, eras and mediums --- even masters like Rembrandt and James M. Whistler.  Owned by the same family at the same location, the gallery is like an art museum that just keeps going and going, except nearly everything in it is for sale. The business is a reflection of more than 75 years of collecting that started with original owners Barbara and Chester Smith, and is lovingly continued by their daughter, Melanie Smith.  Most rooms at Seaside feature themes, like seascapes and local scenes;  Western and Native American art; modern art; antique pottery and vintage art;  and Oriental art. An entire room is dedicated to a huge selection of estate jewelry, and another to a collection of original Audubon art.  A miniature art show --- featuring work no larger than 40-inches square or ,for sculptures, 6 inches ----held annually at the gallery since June 1992 has gained international acclaim. Another show held in February since 2007 “Animals in Art” donates 10 percent of the sale of any animal-related work to the local animal shelter. Artist demonstration shows, lasting anywhere from a day to a week, are also held throughout the year. The owner is also a certified art appraiser.

Opened in 1990, this store is still sometimes called an antique shop, but the owner said it is more accurately described as a quirky little shop that sells some antiques.  What it is mostly known for is its signage that celebrates everything from the beach, to nature to universal life experiences.

Within the walls of this old Nags Head-style cottage shop, decked outside with driftwood, you’ll find the best collection of wildlife art anywhere in the region. With its focus on birds and a specialty in decoys and carvings, its rooms are filled with creations of some of the region‘s most talented and best-known artists and craftsmen. This exceptional gallery is composed of a number of treasure-filled rooms, most with a main theme focus, like crabs, pelicans, herons and egrets, ducks and shorebirds, to name a few. There’s also a nice selection of antiques, art and collectibles related to hunting dogs and fishing.Beautiful bird carvings of all sizes are found throughout the shop and include antiques, reproductions of works by well-known NC carvers and some created by descendants of these legendary artisans. Though the focus is mostly on regional birds, those native to other areas are well-represented. In addition to original carvings and paintings, the shop carries fine prints and reproductions with wildlife, lighthouse and other seashore themes in various media. Also notable are its sculptures, plaques and an eye-catching collection of driftwood. Filling the spaces between the many larger items, is a wide and unique selection of artsy wildlife gifts, along with books, t-shirts, puzzles, greeting cards and much more. A browse through the Bird Store is a visual treat you won’t soon forget. You’ll find the shop just a half mile south of the Wright Brothers Memorial and open most days year round. Off-season days and hours can vary, so call ahead if visiting from out of town.

Bring the carnival to your mouth and eat it like nobody’s watchin’! Donutz-On-A-Stick- where visual stimulation meets taste bud overload!   Carnival Treats at the Beach—With Flavorful Creations and Allergy-Friendly Options, Donutz on a Stick Serves Up Sweet Treats for Everyone   David and Stephanie were not always in the business of carnival confections. In fact, Stephanie was a fitness instructor and David worked in the computer field. But he loved donuts and she loved ice cream, and when they saw an opportunity to bring their favorite treats to beachgoers, they jumped on it.   In 2014, the couple opened their first Donutz on a Stick—a family-run, family-friendly dessert shop on the boardwalk. They quickly realized that in order to serve everyone, they would need to get creative. “We had a family who would come in, and one of the little boys would have to wait by the door because of his gluten allergy,” David says. “That didn’t sit well with us. We wanted everyone to come under the same roof no matter what kind of allergies they had. And we continue to work towards that goal.”   The Williams’ daughter Desireé spent six weeks experimenting until she created a gluten-free donut that was totally safe and delicious. Gluten-free donuts are now a huge part of the business, with more than 1,000 being served each day, just out of the Duck location. But you will want to call or stop by to reserve them in advance.   The Williams’ other three children, David, Justin and Christian, have all invented menu items as well, such as Christian’s donut milkshake, which features hot and fresh cooked donuts blended into a milkshake with another donut on top making it picture perfect.   While all the Williams have created menu items, the most popular pick—the donut sundae—was actually a happy accident.   “We were being featured in a local magazine and we could only have one photo for the article,” David says. Since both ice cream and donuts were equally popular, “we built the donut sundae for the photo and we discovered after the photoshoot that it tasted amazing. It was completely serendipitous.”   The Williams family is constantly creating and improving upon their recipes. At the heart of it all is a desire to see everyone come in and enjoy an experience together. They want to bring the carnival to your mouth.   “No matter how busy we are—even if there’s a line down the boardwalk—every customer gets that engagement and service from us,” they say.   The family has since opened a second location in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area.
