Welcoming all sun seekers, The Sun Shack Tiki-Bo-Tiki Tanning Salon has been offering “beautiful tans since 1999” - and without the hassle of contracts or membership fees. It specializes in professionally detailed mist tanning and will serve individuals to entire wedding parties.Offered at the salon are single-visit to 12-month unlimited tanning packages, featuring Ergoline, Soltron and SunDash 15-minute Super Beds that sit in colorful rooms, artistically decorated with beach motifs. Comments on face book, like “wonderful job” and “great experience” are evidence that customer service and satisfaction are priorities for the salon. Not only does the Shack provide great tanning beds, says one satisfied customer, but it sells a very nice selection of “cute,“ stylish casual dresses, tops, bags, fun jewelry and quality beauty supplies.Sun Shack sees a tan as “a work of art” and says it has everything needed, including over eight years of professional detailed spray tanning experience, to create that work. The salon is open for business every day of the year, and though appointments are recommended, walk-ins are welcome as well.You’ll find the Sun Shack at Seagate North Shopping Center on the Bypass (Hwy 158) on the beach side in Kill Devil Hills. Centrally located on the Beach Road near the Kill Devil Hills bath house, The Trading Post has everything you could possibly need for fun and sun on the beach. And you won’t have to fight highway traffic to get it.For the water there are floats, fins, goggles, boogie boards, bikinis, rubber shoes and flip flops. You’ll also find beach chairs, towels and umbrellas for relaxing in the shade or soaking up the rays, along with a good selection of sun screens and lotions for protection. But just in case you overtax your melanin, there’s a sunburn first aid section to help out.The Trading Post carries an ample selection of swim and beachwear for men, women and children, as well as OBX-theme t-shirts and sweats, including hooded pullovers and cardigans. For those who like to enhance their bikini bodies, the Trading Post offers a number of henna tattoo designs to choose from. And they also have a nice selection accessories, including beach bags, hats, sunglasses, necklaces, ankle bracelets and more.In the souvenir department are lots of magnets, key chains, shell wind chimes, postcards and many other knick knacks to take home, as well as some very special wooden lighthouse replicas.The store also stocks sodas and other convenience store items, and of course it wouldn’t be the beach if there wasn’t salt water taffy. The Trading Post has been an OBX staple since the 1960s. It’s now closed in the winter and has great off-season sales.
The quintessential tourist store, Wings is stocked floor to ceiling with beach-related clothing and nearly every other possible beach-y item imaginable. With store locations from Corolla to Hatteras Island, this is the place visitors depend on to get low-priced Outer Banks T-shirts and souvenirs. Locals are not as prone to shop here, but it’s not unusual to see a resident run in to buy some sand toys or a beach chair. In addition to boogie boards and bathing suits, there’s flip-flops, umbrellas, sun dresses, beach balls, OBX items, sun hats, costume jewelry, sunscreen, lighters, magnets, key chains . . . the list goes on. The stores are a little gaudy, and the merchandise is not known for its high quality, but whatever you purchase will at least get you through your vacation without your wallet taking too much of a hit.

Carnival Treats at the Beach—With Flavorful Creations and Allergy-Friendly Options, Donutz on a Stick Serves Up Sweet Treats for Everyone David and Stephanie were not always in the business of carnival confections. In fact, Stephanie was a fitness instructor and David worked in the computer field. But he loved donuts and she loved ice cream, and when they saw an opportunity to bring their favorite treats to beachgoers, they jumped on it. In 2014, the couple opened their first Donutz on a Stick—a family-run, family-friendly dessert shop on the boardwalk. They quickly realized that in order to serve everyone, they would need to get creative. “We had a family who would come in, and one of the little boys would have to wait by the door because of his gluten allergy,” David says. “That didn’t sit well with us. We wanted everyone to come under the same roof no matter what kind of allergies they had. And we continue to work towards that goal.” The Williams’ daughter Desireé spent six weeks experimenting until she created a gluten-free donut that was totally safe and delicious. Gluten-free donuts are now a huge part of the business, with more than 1,000 being served each day, just out of the Duck location. But you will want to call or stop by to reserve them in advance. The Williams’ other three children, David, Justin and Christian, have all invented menu items as well, such as Christian’s donut milkshake, which features hot and fresh cooked donuts blended into a milkshake with another donut on top making it picture perfect. While all the Williams have created menu items, the most popular pick—the donut sundae—was actually a happy accident. “We were being featured in a local magazine and we could only have one photo for the article,” David says. Since both ice cream and donuts were equally popular, “we built the donut sundae for the photo and we discovered after the photoshoot that it tasted amazing. It was completely serendipitous.” The Williams family is constantly creating and improving upon their recipes. At the heart of it all is a desire to see everyone come in and enjoy an experience together. They want to bring the carnival to your mouth. “No matter how busy we are—even if there’s a line down the boardwalk—every customer gets that engagement and service from us,” they say. The family has since opened a second location in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area.
