Serving Hickory-Smoked Barbecue & Deli Sandwiches for over 25 Years, Duck Deli is as popular and as quaint as its location. The Deli was opened in 1988 by a retired PA dentist, Ronald Forlano, and his son Ken. Today it remains a family venture with Ken, now known as the Deli Llama, still running the business, along with two other brothers and the oldest opening another Duck Deli in PA.Duck Deli boasts “outrageous barbecue” and the “best breakfasts in Duck, which are served every morning of the year from 8-11 am. Available from 11 am to closing are BBQ meals and platters, made with the deli’s own hickory-smoked, pulled chicken, pork or beef. You can also get spicy wings, ribs, crab cakes and ½ or ¼ smoked chicken, as well as meat and veggie subs and sandwiches. All platters come with hushpuppies and a choice of two from a great selection of sides.The owners “take pride” in the smoked meats they cook daily on site. And they “love that you love” their sauces, which are derived from local recipes and enhanced with “Duck Deli flair.” You’ll find that same flair in the deli’s selection of child to adult T-shirts (up to 2X), available in-store..Parking and seating space is limited at this often packed deli, but extra parking across the street and take out are always available. Open ’til 9 pm in-season, the deli closes late afternoon in the fall and spring.Heading north, just past the Duck water tower, on the right, is where you‘ll find this great little deli in the heart of Duck.

Duck Duck Art, located in the loft of Savvy Home Boutique, offers teacher/artist-guided classes for “no-talent novices to blooming artists.”It’s a place that’s “free of judgment and stress,” where kids of all ages can feel comfortable expressing their talent or even finding it for the first time.“ Parents can either stay and participate (but not advise) or feel free to drop off the kids, ages five and up, and go for a break.Taught are scheduled, fun classes in sculpture, tie-dye, acrylics on canvas, watercolor, charcoal, pastel and more. The owner and other local artists guide students through sessions that last about an hour and a half and are usually long enough to complete a project all will feel proud to display. Class time can also be extended, if needed, for an additional fee.Duck Duck also offers, upon request, Girls Nights and Date Nights with “Canvas and Cocktails.” Group events can be scheduled with 24-48 notice upon availability. And, regular yoga classes, taught by certified instructors, are available some mornings and evenings. These classes and special nights do fill up quickly, so be sure to reserve a space by calling or coming by the shop. Duck Duck Art is open only during the late spring and summer months, when the class schedule is posted weekly on facebook.

As everyone can see just walking past this store, many of the mild-weather recreational activities that can be done outdoors are covered here. Racks in front of the store are filled with fat tire beach cruisers, kayaks and surfboards. Inside, surf gear and beach wear ---bathing suits, shorts, shirts and dresses, pants and hoodies ---fill racks and shelves.

If you enjoy a good cup of coffee and a good book, a stop into Duck’s Cottage Coffee & Bookshop is a must. Located in a historic gun shop next to the pond in the Waterfront Shops in Duck, a visit to Duck’s Cottage truly is an experience to savor. Owner Allen LeHew, a self-proclaimed java junkie, uses only the best coffee beans from a small roasting company in Lexington, Virginia.

This fun and family-owned gift shop is a great destination for visitors to uncover a wealth of Outer Banks goodies, thanks to its well-stocked shelves and a wide variety of OBX-themed treasures. Duck's General Store is both charming and enticing, with plenty of gifts and other specialty items that pay homage to the good life on the OBX.

This outlet store features clothing geared towards outdoor living, making it a popular place to shop for Outer Banks residents and tourists who think the best way to enjoy the beautiful barrier islands is by being outside. Since it’s an outlet store, prices are already cut. But seasonal sales offer fantastic bargains, so it’s always worth a stop to see what’s the latest deal. This is a good place to find coats and jackets for men and women, ranging from super warm for the winter months, to raingear and lightweight cover-ups for spring and summer months. There is always a good selection of active wear suitable for golfing or walking, from shirts, skirts, shorts and pants. High-quality backpacks of every size and for every need are also available.

Talk about getting lost in a store! Edith’s Gallery, located in Central Square, features five rooms stuffed with antiques and vintage items and lots of cool “junque.” There’s wonderful finds to be had at this eclectic shop, and an antique lover can easily spend hours looking. Nearly every corner, every shelf, every glass case, every inch of the floor has something interesting. Edith’s sells costume and vintage jewelry, furniture, vintage clothing, children’s toys, magazines, baskets, rugs, dishware, mirrors, old kitchen implements, art, pottery and glassware. There’s a large collection of vintage children’s books and an entire room of knick-knacks. Opened in 2001 by Outer Banks artist Edith Deitgen, the store reflects old Nags Head and there’s always a local gem among the vast inventory. Unlike most businesses on the Outer Banks, the summertime is the quiet time at this tanning salon, meaning you’re more likely not to have to wait for one of the five tanning beds. But even if you just need to touch up your tan before hitting the beach, you’ll find what you need here.  The medium low-pressure “super bed” offers a 15-minute session for those gals or guys who haven’t tanned in a while, and the medium high-pressure 12-minute session (and most popular) is great for those with a “base” who want the quickest and tannest tan.  Sessions can be purchased individually or in packages. There are also at least 40 tanning lotions in stock,  ranging from the most fabulous and expensive, like Designer Skin Black, to mid-range, like Party at the Mansion, to the more affordable, like Super Black. The salon also sells wonderful skin moisturizers and exceptional outdoor tanners and spray-on tan. Twilight Teeth are also available for purchase to whiten your teeth while you’re tanning. In addition to tanning products, the salon sells purses, jewelry, sunglasses and designer jeans.

When you go to the beach, you have to have saltwater taffy. That’s where Forbes Candies comes in. With roots in Virginia Beach going back to 1930, this family-owned business expanded to the Outer Banks in the 1960s, and there are now four locations here with a wide variety of every kind of sweet for your sweetheart, your kids or yourself. But of course the specialty is saltwater taffy in a vast selection of flavors. Then there’s gourmet fudge, made with all kinds of nuts and chocolate flavors. And the Virginia peanut brittle is still made with the same authentic recipe the Forbes used in their first store in Virginia Beach. There are other beachy delicacies like brown sugar and vanilla seafoam. YUM! The stores also have an interesting souvenir selection, and the Rodanthe store, which opens at 7 a.m. in the summer, also serves coffee and tea. 

Looking at the small town of Manteo, with its Crepe Myrtle lined busy main streets, and charming downtown filled with contemporary restaurants and old antique stores, one wouldn't necessarily think that this Outer Banks village was the veritable birthplace of European Settlement in America.

The store, located at the Shoppes at 10.5, off the Bypass at Milepost 10.5, had been opened for three years in Kill Devil Hills before owner Betsy Buchanan moved it to the current Nags Head location.

Here visitors can choose between two go-kart tracks – one slick track for more advanced drivers and one family track with single and double karts. Kiddie karts are also available for children 5 years old and younger. After racing around the track, head over to the bumper cars and test your driving ability. Riders must be more than 48” and can be any age. No trip to the beach is complete without a round of miniature golf. The Gap Outlet store at Tanger Outlet Mall at Milepost 15.5 off the Bypass in Nags Head isn’t just for young people, and it isn’t just about jeans. Men and women of all ages can be seen looking for one of the many bargains and markdowns on dresses, blouses, shorts, men’s shirts and pants, jackets, coats, workout wear, sweaters, T-shirts and hoodies, hats, gloves and shoes. Rather than calling the fashion trendy, Gap, which was founded in 1969, considers its clothing line to be clean and classic.  Clothing and accessories for babies and girls and boys can also be found here. There are plenty of dressing rooms, so even when the store is crowded, there’s seldom a wait to try on clothes. 

The most unique souvenir you could bring home from the Outer Banks is one you make yourself. At the Garden of Beadin’ in Kill Devil Hills, you can make your own jewelry and learn about beading. 

The GEM Center on the Outer Banks of North Carolina is a community-based nonprofit organization that offers adult day services. The GEM Center supports adults with memory loss and physical and mental disabilities, such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Ginger Harvey of Ginger Snaps is a warm, friendly and nationally recognized photographer her clients say they love working with.An Outer Banks native, Ginger says she’s always been a “beach girl at heart” and feels fortunate to be back home after her studies to “live and work with the sand between my toes.” Her degrees in Studio Art and Psychology from UNC-CH are a great background for the passion she finally focused on after studying photography in Italy.Ginger’s specialty is wedding and portrait photography, but she’s also done some very nice local personality photos, like her black and white series of an Outer Banks duck decoy carver. She does a variety of portraits that include family, weddings, pets, maternity and seniors, providing casual and fun sessions that last about an hour. She offers a variety of wedding packages, either pre-designed or custom, and she includes sites from Carova to Hatteras and including Manteo (with travel fees to some areas).Photography-wise, Ginger says her goal  is to “create images that incorporate a balance of candid emotion, photojournalism and  hints of traditional style.”To Ginger, photography is more than a career or something she loves; it’s “who she is,” and she wants you to have as much fun during a shoot as she has. Glazin’ Go-Nuts Paint Your Own Pottery offers a creative and fun activity for the whole family. There’s no better souvenir than your own, uniquely painted pottery that will remind you of this unforgettable fun, crafting experience as well as your vacation in the Outer Banks. 

With such a wonderfully evocative name, you know that the Ghost Fleet Gallery is no ordinary art showcase. First of all, the owner and artist Glenn Eure, (rhymes with “pure,” he likes to say) a character in his own right, designed the building. And since the early 1970s, he and “gallery wife” Pat have been some of the top supporters and boosters of the art community on the Outer Banks.

More than 2,000 shipwrecks sunk off the Coast of North Carolina in what’s called the Graveyard of the Atlantic. With all that history floating around, it was only natural to build a museum to honor and preserve the maritime culture of the Outer Banks. A state-of-the-art structure, the year round museum houses and displays artifacts, and presents a variety of exhibits and interprets the rich maritime culture that includes war, piracy, ghost ships and more. Artifacts include thoseex from the USS Monitor, which sank 16 miles off the Hatteras coast. The lobby features the stunning and original, 1854, First Order Lens from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Current hibits include those on piracy and the Civil War on Hatteras Island.

Green Acres Farm Market in South Duck at Wee Winks Square provides fresh produce from one of the largest and oldest family-owned farms in the area, located in Jarvisburg in Currituck County.In addition to stocking Green Acres with a wide selection of fruits and vegetables, this farm also supplies several markets and restaurants throughout the area with fresh produce.The produce they provide is mostly summer season varieties, including green and red bell, banana and chili peppers; yellow squash; green beans; zuchini; cucumber; onions; garlic; potatoes; several kinds of tomatoes and more. And what they don’t grow themselves on the family farm, Green Acres will get from other local farmers and elsewhere.When available, Green Acres also carries organically-grown produce and tropical fruits like fresh pineapple. The seafood at Harbor House is the real deal. The owners catch fish offshore and inshore on family boat, Prowler. These folks can even tell you exactly where the fish was caught! They offer a variety of seafood, dependant on the season. This includes tuna, flounder, red drum, black drum, sheepshead, trout, grouper, snapper, black seabass, snapper, mahi-mahi, and swordfish. The deli offers some prepared salads, as well. Canned soda is available. They will also offer you fresh seafoood after they close for the season. Just give them a call.
