With roots in Virginia Beach going back to 1930, this family-owned business expanded to the Outer Banks in the 1960s, and there are now four locations here with a wide variety of every kind of sweet for your sweetheart, your kids or yourself. But of course the specialty is saltwater taffy in a vast selection of flavors. Then there’s gourmet fudge, made with all kinds of nuts and chocolate flavors. And the Virginia peanut brittle is still made with the same authentic recipe the Forbes used in their first store in Virginia Beach. There are other beachy delicacies like brown sugar and vanilla seafoam. YUM! The stores also have an interesting souvenir selection, and the Rodanthe store, which opens at 7 a.m. in the summer, also serves coffee and tea.

With such a wonderfully evocative name, you know that the Ghost Fleet Gallery is no ordinary art showcase. First of all, the owner and artist Glenn Eure, (rhymes with “pure,” he likes to say) a character in his own right, designed the building. And since the early 1970s, he and “gallery wife” Pat have been some of the top supporters and boosters of the art community on the Outer Banks.
More than 2,000 shipwrecks sunk off the Coast of North Carolina in what’s called the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Artifacts include thoseex from the USS Monitor, which sank 16 miles off the Hatteras coast. The lobby features the stunning and original, 1854, First Order Lens from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Growlers To Go is OBX’s Beer Destination Nothing pairs better with a day on the beach like an ice cold beer in your hand. If you’re headed to the beaches in Kitty Hawk or Duck, make a pit stop at Growlers To Go Craft Beer. “Packing a cooler and going to the beach is the most natural thing in the world,” says Austin Allen, owner of Growlers To Go Craft Beer. Inspired by a true love and appreciation for all things beer, Growlers To Go offers the widest selection of craft beer on the beach. Allen purchased the first location in Duck from Reid Carter, who started the concept in Richmond, Virginia. “When people would walk in, their eyes would light up seeing all those taps and the variety of beers that we had,” Allen says. “People were mesmerized.” When Allen, an Outer Banks native, found out that Carter was selling, she bought the Duck location and shifted its focus to showcase local and regional beers. “Reid had a great vision,” she shares. “I tried to take it to the next level and continued with that at the new store.” Both the Duck and Kitty Hawk locations boast up to 42 taps—with different options at each store—featuring local Outer Banks breweries along with regional and national selections. “We do have a large number of taps, but it’s the beer itself that really shines,” Allen explains. “We take a lot of pride in finding local and regional beers that are highly rated.” Purchase four and six packs or choose from more than 100 single beers that are already cold and ready to enjoy. Mix and match the singles to create a personalized six pack. When you visit, take some time to hang out and explore the array of flavors with samples, in-house pints and flights. Then load up the ones you like the most in a growler or pint to-go. In addition to beer, Growlers To Go also has a carefully curated selection of fine wines, premium cigars and T-shirts designed by local artist Britton Ricketts. Donutz-On-A-Stick- where visual stimulation meets taste bud overload! Carnival Treats at the Beach—With Flavorful Creations and Allergy-Friendly Options, Donutz on a Stick Serves Up Sweet Treats for Everyone David and Stephanie were not always in the business of carnival confections. In fact, Stephanie was a fitness instructor and David worked in the computer field. But he loved donuts and she loved ice cream, and when they saw an opportunity to bring their favorite treats to beachgoers, they jumped on it. In 2014, the couple opened their first Donutz on a Stick—a family-run, family-friendly dessert shop on the boardwalk. They quickly realized that in order to serve everyone, they would need to get creative. “We had a family who would come in, and one of the little boys would have to wait by the door because of his gluten allergy,” David says. “That didn’t sit well with us. We wanted everyone to come under the same roof no matter what kind of allergies they had. And we continue to work towards that goal.” The Williams’ daughter Desireé spent six weeks experimenting until she created a gluten-free donut that was totally safe and delicious. Gluten-free donuts are now a huge part of the business, with more than 1,000 being served each day, just out of the Duck location. But you will want to call or stop by to reserve them in advance. The Williams’ other three children, David, Justin and Christian, have all invented menu items as well, such as Christian’s donut milkshake, which features hot and fresh cooked donuts blended into a milkshake with another donut on top making it picture perfect. While all the Williams have created menu items, the most popular pick—the donut sundae—was actually a happy accident. “We were being featured in a local magazine and we could only have one photo for the article,” David says. Since both ice cream and donuts were equally popular, “we built the donut sundae for the photo and we discovered after the photoshoot that it tasted amazing. It was completely serendipitous.” The Williams family is constantly creating and improving upon their recipes. At the heart of it all is a desire to see everyone come in and enjoy an experience together. They want to bring the carnival to your mouth. “No matter how busy we are—even if there’s a line down the boardwalk—every customer gets that engagement and service from us,” they say. The family has since opened a second location in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area.
