The shop manager likes to describe this cool store as “the most fun place on the beach.” That might be pushing it, but it’s definitely one of those stores that make you smile and want to take something home. It’s got everything from classic women’s clothing to cutting edge trendy garb, for “teeny-bopper to grandmother,” and from tip to toe ---literally. There’s shapewear, dresses, blouses, pants, skirts and shoes and sandals. And there are all the embellishments and accessories---belts, scarves, purses, jewelry, hats --- all unique and stylish. Plus, there’s lots of playful and colorful housewares and beach-y décor --- mirrors, lamps, shell decorations, art, candles, picture frames. There are even troll beads and charms in stock. Funny cards and plaques sold throughout the store would make an amusing gift or souvenir.

Smell it and you will definitely want to buy it. So of course, the exquisite aroma wafts outside, and by the time people come into the store, their resistance to this homemade fudge is pretty weak. The free samples the staff offer pretty much seals the deal. Made right before your eyes, this creamy fudge comes in numerous mouth watering flavors, including peanut butter, maple nut, rocky road and of course, chocolate. Started in 1980 on the Outer Banks, The Fudgery now has about 27 stores located in 15 states. The business caught on not only because of its fresh ingredients, but because customers could watch the scrumptious confection being cooked and hand-turned on marble slabs into loaves. Plus, if customers were lucky, the candy maker would sing for them while he worked. (Really!) The store also sells homemade caramel apples, so how can anyone resist? There are also dessert toppings in jars based on the same recipe in three flavors: chocolate, chocolate mint and amaretto. And if you want more when you get home, you can order the fudge, dessert toppings and candy apples from The Fudgery’s online store.
The Gift Garden has one of the largest selections of Tervis on the Outer Banks. Nostalgic candy and sodas and salt water taffy.

30 YEARS IN THE MAKING. Since the beginning, the Weeping Radish has brewed beer according to the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot Purity Law of 1516 which states that beer must be brewed using only four ingredients: Hops, Malt, Yeast and Water. No additives, chemicals or preservatives may be used. Uli Bennewitz came to North Carolina in the early-1980s and decided to open a microbrewery similar to the ones he’d left behind in Bavaria.

But what it has is staff who thoroughly know their stuff, not just about what they stock, but how it’s used, where to fish, what’s in season, what’s being caught, what the regulations are, how to get to the best fishing spots and what to expect from the weather. Most days, the owner himself is on hand to give his take on the latest. Besides the standard gear you’d expect, from names like Shimano, Berkely Gulp, Flambeau, Power Pro, Calcutta, Eagle Claw, Igloo and much more, the store also sells T-shirts, sunglasses and numerous fishing accessories. Whalebone has earned a fine reputation for its custom-designed rods for charter boats, especially those used to catch tuna and marlins. The tackle store also repairs equipment.
The quintessential tourist store, Wings is stocked floor to ceiling with beach-related clothing and nearly every other possible beach-y item imaginable. With store locations from Corolla to Hatteras Island, this is the place visitors depend on to get low-priced Outer Banks T-shirts and souvenirs. In addition to boogie boards and bathing suits, there’s flip-flops, umbrellas, sun dresses, beach balls, OBX items, sun hats, costume jewelry, sunscreen, lighters, magnets, key chains . . . the list goes on. The stores are a little gaudy, and the merchandise is not known for its high quality, but whatever you purchase will at least get you through your vacation without your wallet taking too much of a hit.

Donutz-On-A-Stick- where visual stimulation meets taste bud overload! Carnival Treats at the Beach—With Flavorful Creations and Allergy-Friendly Options, Donutz on a Stick Serves Up Sweet Treats for Everyone David and Stephanie were not always in the business of carnival confections. In fact, Stephanie was a fitness instructor and David worked in the computer field. But he loved donuts and she loved ice cream, and when they saw an opportunity to bring their favorite treats to beachgoers, they jumped on it. In 2014, the couple opened their first Donutz on a Stick—a family-run, family-friendly dessert shop on the boardwalk. They quickly realized that in order to serve everyone, they would need to get creative. “We had a family who would come in, and one of the little boys would have to wait by the door because of his gluten allergy,” David says. “That didn’t sit well with us. We wanted everyone to come under the same roof no matter what kind of allergies they had. And we continue to work towards that goal.” The Williams’ daughter Desireé spent six weeks experimenting until she created a gluten-free donut that was totally safe and delicious. Gluten-free donuts are now a huge part of the business, with more than 1,000 being served each day, just out of the Duck location. But you will want to call or stop by to reserve them in advance. The Williams’ other three children, David, Justin and Christian, have all invented menu items as well, such as Christian’s donut milkshake, which features hot and fresh cooked donuts blended into a milkshake with another donut on top making it picture perfect. While all the Williams have created menu items, the most popular pick—the donut sundae—was actually a happy accident. “We were being featured in a local magazine and we could only have one photo for the article,” David says. Since both ice cream and donuts were equally popular, “we built the donut sundae for the photo and we discovered after the photoshoot that it tasted amazing. It was completely serendipitous.” The Williams family is constantly creating and improving upon their recipes. At the heart of it all is a desire to see everyone come in and enjoy an experience together. They want to bring the carnival to your mouth. “No matter how busy we are—even if there’s a line down the boardwalk—every customer gets that engagement and service from us,” they say. The family has since opened a second location in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area.
